Some Insight Into Pell Grants

Many students today without the availability of Pell Grants would find that they are unable to carry on with their education. The Pell Grants programs provides those students who are participating in an undergraduate or post baccalaureate course the chance to carry on their studies even if their parents are on a low income.

At present there are around 5,400 post secondary institutes where students can use the Pell grant program in order to continue their education. But there are certain conditions which the student will need to meet in order to be eligible for such a grant and how much they are awarded. The factors that will be taken into consideration when determining if a student is eligible for a Pell grant are as follows:-

1. The amount that the student’s parents are actually able to comfortably contribute towards the cost of their child’s further education.

2. The amount it is actually going to cost the student to attend the college that they have chosen and which will have been determined by that particular institution.

3. The next factor that is taken into consideration is whether the student is going to be attending the college or university on a full time or part time basis.

4. Also another factor that is taken into consideration to determine whether a student is eligible for a Pell grant or not is how long they attend the college for throughout the year. Certainly those who are going to be at college throughout the year are more likely to be approved for this kind of grant than those that aren’t.

In order for the US Department of Education to determine if financial assistance for the student is required then they have standard formula they use to calculate this. There are certain things that need to be considered when the Department of Education uses the formula. They need to look at what income the student has if they independent, they will also look at what income the students parents have as well as any assets. They also look at the size of the family the number of family members who are also in post secondary education.

The kinds of students who are able to apply for Pell grants are those individuals who have enrolled or been accepted for participating in either an undergraduate or vocational course. Plus they must also be attending one of the colleges or universities in the US which participate in the Pell grants program.

How much money the student receives when accepted for Pell grants depends on the factors mentioned above. In 2008 a total of 5,578,000 students were awarded such grants and on average a student received $2,945.
